Going downtown and witnessing a culture I'd never seen before and enjoying the similarities and differences. My trip to Africa was a powerful experience as well. Also driving in the area is like being on a roller coaster. What's the most useful item you packed? TV shows on DVD What do you wish you had packed? More civilian clothes and more TV shows on DVD. When did you realize you "weren't in Kansas anymore;" aka your "Dorothy" moment? It has to be the heat and how extremely bright it is when you walk outside. You regret it if you go outside without sunglasses. What's the best part of the deployment? Being able to know the people I work with before deploying. I knew them and got along with them at Contingency Skills Training. Also, a friend I knew before I came into the military is here and I rarely see him, so it is good spending time with him again. The worst part? There are no bathrooms in the rooms so waking up and having to walk about 50 yards to go to the bathroom at night. What new survival skill have you learned? How to hold it as long as you can! What do you do during down time? Hang out with my friend or watch movies. I go downtown on my days off. What is the first thing you will do and eat when you return? Hug and kiss my wife a lot - hug and scratch my cat - open my mail - go to Buffalo Wild Wings to eat and play trivia.
